So the new quarter starts for us on Monday and I’m pretty excited about it. I have the first two weeks of school mapped out already. I’m a bit of an eager beaver that way. I don’t know how excited my child is about going back to school since she has spent a good two weeks vegging in front of one of the two TV’s in the house but nonetheless it is coming upon us.
Let me explain what I am working with. I have what I like to call a “Smart Cookie.” Now this smart cookie of mine can sometimes be to smart for her own good and sometimes wiser than her age. She has an old wisedom about her. It’s kind of frightening sometimes. Along with the intelligence that lives between my child’s eyes and ears, there is a rather willful and stubborn child constantly rearing it’s ugly head. She’s a great child. Funny as all life however, she can sometimes be a hand full. She has a PHd is stalling.
Part of our struggle the first quarter was attempting to undo the damage that was placed on her self esteem due to her experiences in Catholic school. That story is much to long for this particular post but if you all are interested I’ll be happy to tell the tale in another post on another day. Needless to say, I had my job cut out for me this past quarter trying to convince and prove to my very skeptical daughter, that she was much smarter than her former teacher lead her to believe. I’m happy to report that though we are awaiting the final grades her peliminary grades are 11 A’s and 2 B’s. One of those B’s very well could be an A, it just depends on what grade she gets on her book report.
With all of this being said we are now entering into phase two. After grading all of her work I found where I was lacking as a teacher and need to do better to assist her. I need to grade her work every week and not wait until report card time. Number one it’s to much work and two if you grade every week you have a better understanding of what your child understands and what they need help with. Number two, there are certain subjects though she can work independently she would benefit more if I worked with her on them. So that’s what I will be doing.
For you mom’s out there that want to know the day to day operations I’m going to list my peliminary schedule and as the first week goes by I will let you know how each day goes. I know it’s really important to see how everyone is getting along out there. We learn so much from taking a peek into someone else’s homeschool day. I must warn you a head of time. Our scheduled days will be the most packed you probably have ever seen and you may very well get tired just from reading.
So here’s the plan:
6:00am I need to wake up, start my coffee, speak my affirmations and try to center myself
7:00am Wake the child, make her get ready and start making breakfast
8:00am Harmonie does Spanish (Rosetta Stone) while I clean the dishes and check my emails etc.
9:00am 20 Jump in Jacks, 20 Crunches and 10 Push ups together then Math
11:15 History or Science (depending on the week. We alternate)
11:30 Spelling or Vocabulary (depending on the week)
12:00 or 12:30 We will have lunch, then head off to run errands, go to the library, with any luck go to the bay where I like to sit and meditate for an hour while she plays (we haven’t been able to fit this in the schedule before but it is a mandatory activity for my mental state) and finally I get a few hours to make business calls and make products for my businesses
5:30pm Bath while I clean the kitchen
6:00-7:00pm TV Time
7:00pm Brush Teeth
8:00pm Bedtime for Harmonie
8:00pm-11:00pm I get to sit and watch TV alone while doing my own school work. Write my blog entries for the night and catch up on any work I didn’t get to do earlier in the day then head off to bed to rinse wash and sort of repeat.
Our schedule should for the most part look like that except for these activities:
Noon-1:00pm Therapy Session (this means that any unfinished work is done on the road)
5:00-8:00pm I teach two Dance Classes
2:00-2:30 Every other Thursday I have a Piano student to teach
This is a different day because we do test, Piano and Art on this day. School hours are shorter it should look something like this.
10:00am Religion Review
10:15am Spelling or Vocabulary Test
11:30am Clean up and prepare lunch
12:30pm Clean the bathroom and living room for my work day of Piano Students
1:30-5:00pm I teach Piano lessons
Swoooo! Are you tired yet? I am just typing all of this. Now as you know our days can be interrupted by many things but this is a rough draft of what our week should look like not counting my Saturday Piano students and Harmonie’s swim lessons. Let’s see how good I am at keeping as close to the schedule as possible. I’m pretty anal retentive and very structure oriented so I’m sure I will keep as close to it as possible. I let you know how it goes on Monday. Have a great weekend.
