The Movement Towards Homeschooling

January 31, 2014 by Kay 1 Comment

Earlier today I met a young mother and she asked me what grade was Harmonie in. I told her the third grade and the conversation of home school began. She told me that her mother is a school teacher and she has continuously tells her that she should home school her four year old daughter. This young mother was surprised that her own mother, a school teacher, advocated for home school instead of public or private school.

I told this young mother that there is a huge movement toward homeschooling instead of public or private schooling. She agreed that she has noticed the shift and movement towards it. We spent a little time discussing the alternatives and why it would be a great benefit for her and her child. She asked our story and I told her why we decided to do it so soon. After hearing our story she admitted that, that was exactly the reason why she would consider homeschooling her baby girl. She expressed that she is afraid of what could happen to her child if she sent her to school. I know to some of you, who still have your children in a traditional school setting, this may sound extreme but let’s analyze our world for a minute.

I listen to the news on talk radio. For the past two weeks alone, all they have been talking about is priest in Chicago molesting children, the teacher that was forcing students to eat his sperm on cookies and other various disgusting acts, and how in LA Unified there is a current lawsuit going on to force LAUSD to get rid of the bad teachers with tenure. With all of this going on in just LA County alone how could you not be afraid to send your kids to school. With school shootings going on everywhere including elementary school, I would be afraid. After all that we and others have gone through at our own school, I know first hand that parents really do need to think hard and consider whether or not they want their kids in a traditional school setting or home school. It is not an easy decision to make either but it is becoming more and more necessary to consider your options.

It’s sad that Americans live in this society now where these types of decisions have to be made. But the truth is America no longer is the highest ranking in education. There are more problems with our education system in this country than ever before. Something has to change. We either sit and keep our heads in the sand or make changes.

What was your reason for choosing homeschooling? If your kids are traditionally educated do you have any fears and concerns that you ponder? Have you ever considered homeschooling your kids? What are your biggest reasons to not home school? Let’s talk about it!
